Martin Kohlstedt is among the most outstanding composers, pianists, and producers in the fields of instrumental music and electronica. His albums Tag, Nacht, Strom, Ströme, Flur, Feld, along with their accompanying reworks, have received international acclaim and have been followed by concert tours around the world. Both in his live performances and on his recordings, Martin Kohlstedt sets benchmarks for how cutting-edge electronica can merge with analogue and acoustic elements drawn from classical piano, ambient music, field recordings, and score design. He intuitively brings together influences from these very different worlds, shaping them into a shared form and transforming them into a living, breathing whole — whether as a spectacular festival show, an introspective piano concert, a multidimensional film soundtrack, or an immersive album experience. Kohlstedt describes his way of working as modular composition: his pieces are constantly in motion and do not follow a fixed structure, even in concert. Improvisation is an essential part of his creative process, as are meeting the audience on equal footing, the courage to fail, the act of searching, and the interaction with people, space, and context. Martin Kohlstedt has collaborated with renowned partners such as the GewandhausChor Leipzig, artists including Douglas Dare, Sudan Archives, and Henrik Schwarz, as well as labels like Warner Classics. In addition to his own compositions, he writes soundtracks for films, theatre productions, podcasts, and radio plays. With Edition Kohlstedt, he runs his own label and, through a dedicated reforestation project, seeks to take responsibility as an artist beyond music itself.
Martin Kohlstedt zählt zu den herausragenden Komponisten, Pianisten und Produzenten für instrumentale Musik und Electronica. Seine bisherigen Alben «Tag», «Nacht», «Strom», «Ströme», «Flur», «Feld» und deren Begleiter in Form von Reworks erhielten internationale Anerkennung, begleitet von Konzertreisen auf der ganzen Welt. Sowohl live, als auch auf seinen Aufnahmen setzt Martin Kohlstedt Standards darin, wie cutting edge Electronica mit analogen und akustischen Elementen aus klassischem Klavier, Ambient, Field Recordings und Score Design zusammenkommen können. Kohlstedt schafft es für die Einflüsse aus so unterschiedlichen Welten intuitiv eine gemeinsame Form zu finden und daraus einen lebendigen Körper zu bilden. Als spektakuläre Festivalshow, als introspektives Klavierkonzert, multidimensionaler Filmsoundtrack oder immersives Albumerlebnis. Seine Art des Arbeitens bezeichnet Kohlstedt als modulares Komponieren, die Stücke sind ständig in Bewegung und folgen auch im Konzert keiner festgelegten Form. Improvisation ist zwingend Teil des Schaffens, ebenso wie Augenhöhe mit dem Publikum, der Mut zu Scheitern, das Suchen und die Interaktion mit Menschen, Raum und Kontext. Martin Kohlstedt kollaborierte dabei bereits mit renommierten Partnern wie dem GewandhausChor Leipzig, mit Künstlern wie Douglas Dare, Sudan Archives, Henrik Schwarz und Labels wie Warner Classics. Neben eigenen Stücken schreibt Kohlstedt Soundtracks für Filme, Theaterstücke, Podcasts und Hörspiele. Mit der Edition Kohlstedt führt er sein eigenes Label und versucht mit einem eigenen Aufforstungsprojekt seiner Verantwortung als Artist gerecht zu werden.
